You’re too scared to cold call...but we can help.
Sales Life LOI #4
Objectively speaking, cold calling is not hard. You pick up a phone, enter ten digits and have a short conversation with someone. You are not a steelworker building a skyscraper or a surgeon trying to save a life. You sit at a desk and pick up a phone.
So why do so many salespeople struggle with it? Because it puts you face-to-face with your big fears.
“I suck at this.”
“I don’t have a lot to offer.”
“People don’t want me to bug them.”
“I may never make another sale”
If you analyze your resistance to cold calling, you will likely see fear lurking beneath the surface. Cold calling is not hard, but it is scary. At least for me. Every bad call I make is a confirmation that I don’t know I’m doing, I’m not good at this, I won’t be able to support my family anymore. No wonder I spend time in my inbox instead. It’s nice and safe there dealing with the people who have already hired me.
But new business development is the lifeblood of a sales pipeline that won’t run dry. So, if you’re like us, you probably have to do some cold calling. A simple hack for getting the job done is to gamify it. Like anything that is tough and requires consistent discipline, gamifying your approach to cold calls can be the difference between success and failure.
Luckily for all of us Justin came up with the perfect way to do this….Cold Call Golf. Here’s how it works:
18 dials, no mulligans
Par - getting a decision maker on the phone
Birdie - closing for a meeting
Eagle - getting a BOV assignment
Ace - getting a verbal hire. “Send me your listing agreement”….highly unlikely but that’s why it’s an ace
Bogey - did not get decision maker on the phone, but left a VM
Double bogey - wrong number. Dial tone.
We’ve enclosed the scorecard to make this easy for you. Thank you, Justin for creating and sharing. :)
Make no mistake: YOU STILL HAVE TO FACE YOUR FEARS. But this approach is easy enough to help you start building momentum. Anyone can make 18 calls.
So, gamify your cold calls. Play a round this week and post your score on your socials. Tag us. This will take less than half the time of an actual round of golf….and it will put food on your table.
Try it.
